Hubei Academy of Social Sciences (HASS) is the highest academic research organization in the fields of philosophy and social sciences as well as a provincial research center of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory in Hubei Province under the administration of Hubei Provincial Party Committee, Hubei Provincial Government and Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department.
HASS was established in 1978 growing out of Wuhan Philosophy and Social Science Research Institute, China Academy of Sciences and Hubei Philosophy and Social Science Research Institute. After thirty years construction and development, HASS is becoming a multi-subjects and comprehensive social science research institution with extensive influence.
Doctor Song Yaping (professor, supervisor of doctor student) is current president. HASS is composed of 13 research units: Institute of Economics, Institute of Rural Agricultural Economics, Institute of Yangtze River Economics, Institute of Midland Development, Institute of Finance and Trade, Institute of Marxism, Institute of Philosophy, Institute of Politics and Law, Institute of Sociology, Institute of Literature and History, Institute of Chu Culture, Editorial Office of Jianghan Tribune, Center of Books and Information. The administration offices include: General Office, Personnel Office, Scientific Research Office, Center of Education Management, Finance Office, Foreign Affairs and Information Office, Administrative Division, and the Office of Party Committee, etc.
Now HASS has 211 on-the-job staff members in all, of which 180 are professional workers and 39 are administrative personnel. Among the professional workers, 58 persons are with senior professional titles, and 67 with intermediate and junior professional titles. Among the senior professional personnel, 23 are awarded State Council Special Subsidy Expert; 11 are awarded Hubei Provincial Government Special Subsidy Experts; 8 are awarded Provincial Outstanding Contributions Young and Middle-aged Experts.
Hubei Academy of Social Sciences has the characteristic and stronger scientific research advantage in many fields, as followings: Marxism, International Trade, Characteristic Economy, Hubei Province Social and Economic Development Strategy, Rural Agriculture, Local Authority, Yangtze River Valley Economy, Yangtze River Culture, Jingchu Culture, Enterprise Management. Establishing extensive foreign academic exchanges is a long-term principle of HASS. Dozens of experts visited USA, UK, Japan, etc. (more than a dozen country) to do academic exchange. A dozen young and middle-aged scholars went abroad to study for the doctor, master's degree or be visiting scholars. Most of them returned China and become the backbone of their respective institute and showing their brilliant capabilities in scientific researches. HASS hold various conferences, seminars and lectures to promote external academic exchanges.
